Robert Francis is best known for his volumes of poetry and his numerous contributions to journals and magazines. His first book, Stand With Me Here, was published in The last book to be published during his lifetime was Traveling in Amherst: A Poet's Journal (). Other writings include The Sound I Listened For (), Orb Weavers (), Like Ghosts of Eagles (), and Butterhill (). Settling first in Buckinghamshire and then in Herefordshire, he cultivated the friendship of a number of English poets. We might think — perhaps we should hope — that by now there would be no need for further study of Robert Frost's position as a New England poet. For over half a century, amid wide-ranging discussion of this renowned author, one of the few commonly accepted premises has been that he was indeed "a New England poet, perhaps the New England. At the time Robert Frost lived in Beaconsfield, England ( and ), he corresponded with the English poet Frank S. Flint, who lived in London. The letters were written from Frosts cottage, known as The Bungalow. Six letters remain unpublished from the Frost-Flint collection, housed at the Harry.

The volume contains two of the best essays on Frost ever published: “The Other Robert Frost” and “To the Laodiceans.” See also Jarrell’s later essay, “Robert Frost’s ‘Home Burial’” (collected in Jarrell’s Third Book of Criticism [New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, ]). In general, the finest critical work done on Frost.   A very nice book of poems to have around when your attention is constantly being diverted. Most of his poems are quite happy and satisfying to read, with an occasional venture towards deeper and darker things (See the Three 'Sister' poems, p ). Good for people who enjoy the works of two other Amherst poets (Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson).Reviews: 7.
